The Myth of Downsizing

Decoupling Downsizing From Moving

It is a myth that downsizing automatically means you’re about to move out of your home sweet home.  In fact, there are many good reasons to declutter.

To live unencumbered:  Many downsizers who have cleared up space by getting rid of all the things they never use and live wisely with only the things they need, feel an enormous sense of relief and freedom.
To be light enough to travel: For others, a simplified home base makes it easier to make travel plans at the last minute or to stay on the road for extended periods.  With less to maintain, you are better able to take advantage of great travel deals or make yourself available for spontaneous family events.
To find more time:  Our lives have gotten busier and busier and more stuff doesn’t help. A downsized home means you spend less time cleaning, repairing or just wandering around wondering where you put something!

Rewarding awards

Larger homes allow you to have extra shelving or places where you can proudly display your favorite memorabilia or trophies—items that mean a lot to you but that can take up a lot of space.

Living in a smaller space means paring down—and yes parting with—some of your cherished awards.

But, fear not, you will end up gaining more.

Are you an accomplished golfer or tennis player with a lifetime of trophies that recognize your accomplishments?

Take a moment to think about the ones that mean the most to you and keep just those.  Then, remove the plaques from the rest and donate them to a local sports organization.
Soon you will find that just keeping one or two of your trophies will be enough for you to reminisce about all of your accomplishments.

You can also take great pleasure in knowing that the spirit of your victories will live on through your generous donations.

“I just need someone to hold my hand.”

That’s how one women expressed herself to a fellow Senior Move Manager after reading this article in the New York Times, NYT Helping Elderly Downsize.

For seven years, she had been avoiding cleanout of her storage locker, where she kept items that were remnants of her marriage, reminders of a very difficult divorce.

Whether it is your home, your condo or your garage, Senior Move Managers are caring individuals who take the time to help you manage the mental and physical work of moving on.

At Avenue Sixty-Two, we know these household objects are not just ‘stuff’ to be tossed aside – a sentiment that some people feel is leveled at them and their things – but rather loved objects associated with happy family tips, great vacations and important accomplishments.

Senior Move Managers come from professions where they developed a deep understanding of the special concerns people have when making a big transition. Many started out in people-oriented professions, such as social work, administration and realty

When I meet with my colleagues across the country, I am struck by the common feeling of a need to protect those who are vulnerable and who are going through emotional stressors due to an imminent move.

Our desire to safeguard our clients’ interests is at the heart of why we do what we do. Even though it can be tough, highly emotional work, seeing them well-served and happy in their new situation is highly fulfilling.
